As a professional wedding magician, I have been fortunate enough to perform at hundreds of weddings across the UK, but the story of how I became part of James and Charlotte’s wedding day at Colshaw Hall ib Cheshire is certainly one I won’t forget.
How a chance motorway encounter led to an unforgettable wedding celebration
Some wedding bookings begin with a phone call.
Some begin with a website enquiry.
And occasionally, a wedding booking comes from a moment so unexpected that it feels like it was meant to happen.
It all started at the National Wedding Show at the NEC Birmingham.
Meeting James and Charlotte at the National Wedding Show
Last year, while exhibiting as The Modern Conman at the National Wedding Show, I met James and Charlotte.
Like many couples I meet at wedding fayres, we had a great conversation about their plans and what they wanted their wedding day to feel like.
During our chat, James introduced me to something completely different from my usual world of cards, sleight of hand and deception — the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
We exchanged a few messages afterwards on Instagram about the glasses, and after hearing how much James enjoyed using them, I eventually decided to buy a pair myself.
Then, as often happens after meeting people at busy wedding exhibitions, life became busy. We carried on with our own businesses and adventures, and we didn’t really speak again.
Until one very unexpected moment changed everything.
The Motorway Mystery
After attending a wedding fayre, I was driving home when something caught my eye.
Ahead of me was an incredible red Volkswagen Transporter.
It was a stunning van, but what really grabbed my attention was the registration plate:
PHO7OS
Being involved in the wedding industry, my first thought was that it must belong to a photographer who had been exhibiting at the fayre.
I overtook the van, admired it, and carried on with my journey.
A few moments later, the van accelerated to catch me up.
As it came alongside me, the driver and passenger started waving enthusiastically.
I waved back, but I had absolutely no idea who they were.
Then my phone buzzed.
It was a message from James.
He had spotted my private registration plate:
TR17CKS
Without knowing it was actually my car, he turned to Charlotte and said:
“That has to be The Modern Conman!”
Somehow, from a random vehicle on the motorway, James had made the connection.
And the funny thing was…
He was right.
Out of all the cars travelling along that motorway at that exact moment, we had somehow found each other again.
What are the chances?
James and Charlotte joked that this simply had to be a sign and that they needed to book me for their wedding.
Sometimes you just have to listen when life gives you a little nudge.
A Stunning Wedding at Colshaw Hall
Fast forward to their wedding day at the beautiful Colshaw Hall in Knutsford, and what a celebration it was.
From the moment I arrived, it was obvious that this was going to be a very special wedding.
Charlotte looked absolutely stunning, and James looked as dapper as a man gets.
They were the perfect example of a couple who had created a wedding day that reflected exactly who they are — stylish, fun, and full of personality.
But what stood out most wasn’t just how amazing they looked.
It was how much they enjoyed every single moment of their day.
James and Charlotte were genuinely one of those couples who made everyone around them feel included. The atmosphere was fantastic, the guests were brilliant, and it was a real privilege to be invited to be part of their wedding.
Creating Magic During The Drinks Reception
I was delighted to entertain their guests during the drinks reception with close-up magic and interactive trickery.
This is one of my favourite parts of being a wedding magician.
The drinks reception is such an important part of the wedding day. Guests are arriving, family members are meeting, conversations are beginning, and everyone is enjoying the excitement before the wedding breakfast.
Close-up magic creates those perfect moments where people stop, laugh, and share something unforgettable together.
Whether it’s impossible card magic, borrowed objects appearing and disappearing, or a moment that leaves guests asking “How did he do that?”, my aim is always the same:
To create memories that become part of the story of the day.
The Most Incredible Crazy Golf Experience
As if the wedding wasn’t already amazing enough, James and Charlotte had something I had never seen at a wedding before.
CRAZY9.
Now, I have seen plenty of wedding entertainment ideas over the years, but this was genuinely in a league of its own.
The quality of the Crazy9 setup was absolutely outstanding. It wasn’t just a few putting obstacles put together — it was a beautifully designed, premium experience that immediately became a talking point among guests.
The attention to detail was incredible, and the quality was on another level compared to anything I had seen before at a wedding.
It gave guests the perfect opportunity to relax, have some friendly competition, laugh together and create even more memories throughout the day.
I love seeing couples bring their personalities into their weddings, and James and Charlotte absolutely did that.
Their wedding wasn’t about simply following tradition — it was about creating an experience that felt unique to them and giving their guests moments they would remember long after the celebrations ended.
From the stunning surroundings of Colshaw Hall, to the entertainment, to the incredible personal touches throughout the day, everything felt carefully chosen and perfectly matched to this amazing couple.
The Magic Behind Every Wedding
Looking back, it still makes me smile that a meeting at the National Wedding Show NEC, a conversation about Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and a mysterious number plate on the motorway eventually led to me performing at James and Charlotte’s wedding.
As a wedding magician in Birmingham, the West Midlands and across the UK, I never take for granted the trust couples place in me to entertain their friends and family on one of the biggest days of their lives.
Every wedding has its own story.
Every couple has their own personality.
And every celebration has those moments that guests remember forever.
This one just happened to begin on a motorway.
Congratulations James and Charlotte — thank you for allowing The Modern Conman to be part of your incredible wedding day.
